Old People Music

Mom with her kids familybringsjoy.com

My Sister, Mom, Brother and I

This last weekend was heavenly. Many of my family members, including both sets of parents came to visit us this weekend.  I can’t begin to explain the joy it brought me to have everyone here. I would find myself smiling as laughter wafted through the house.

The main reason which brought family in town was Alice…the one act play derived from Alice in Wonderland.  My youngest daughter has embraced my thespian side. She was cast as the Dormouse in this school play.

Son with cake familybringsjoy.comHowever, Saturday happened to be my Mom’s Birthday!  We used this opportunity to hold a party of sorts for both her and my Son who turned 17 last week.  It was casual. We had BBQ, cake and watched both the Texas Rangers & Alabama (my Mom went to Alabama for 2 years) games.

Funny story

My Daughter had to leave the party early Saturday to prepare for the play.  She didn’t see the gifts I bought for her Grandmother.  Here’s a conversation I had with my Daughter on the way home from school yesterday:

Me: “I received a text from Grandmother today.  She said she is loving her new Taylor Swift CD.”

Her: “You gave her a Taylor Swift CD?”

Me: “Yes, 1989.”

Her: “Why?”

Me: “She likes Taylor Swift.  I found out since she has been visiting she didn’t have a copy, so I thought it would be the perfect gift! Why do you sound surprised?”

Her: “Because, I thought she liked old people music.”

Mom Opening 1989 by Taylor Swift familybringsjoy.comWe then had a discussion about how my mom likes all kinds of music.  It was a good teaching opportunity for me to explain how music isn’t generational. Personally, I really love it when an album can be listened and enjoyed by several generations.  I believe Taylor Swift’s 1989 does just that.  I believe the only other CD I have gifted as much as 1989 would be Mindy Gledhill’s Winter Moon & Anchor albums.

Despite the couple of bad words in Taylor’s 1989, it is a remarkable album with up tempo and slow songs for every kind of mood.  Plus, every time I hear about the amount of money she gives to someone in need, I don’t mind spending the money on her album.  She earned every penny with her excellent lyrics. I’m happy to support an artist who appears to be a genuine person in spite of her fame.  Keep up the good work Taylor!  Our family is enjoying your music. 🙂

Oh blog, how I’ve missed you.

Music Brings Joy,

Happy Birthday Sugar Bear!

Before going running this morning, I wanted to write something for my youngest baby girl who is turning 6 today. I don’t know why, but this birthday is difficult for me. 6 just seems too old for my baby, meaning my youngest (all my children are my babies.) She has been so excited for this birthday. She’s been counting down the days and had to open up something this morning before going to school. Nana, she opened up your card. She said she knew it was yours because of the fish sticker. I called Radio Disney to wish her a Happy Birthday after dropping her off at school. I think it will air tomorrow, though. Later this afternoon I will bring
some princess cup cakes (she requested) to school for her class.

~Yesterday she had her Kindergarten “graduation.”~

Today I will write my traditional birthday letter as I do on all my kid’s birthdays. It is one of my favorite traditions. It will go in her Dear Sweet Child Letter Box from Once Upon a Family. (If you want to learn more about this go to my website https://www.familybringsjoy.com/) As a mom, it is on these special birthdays, as well as Mother’s Day, that I feel so deeply blessed & honored to be a mother to my children.

Birthday Blessings,

36 Things

In honor of my Sister turning 36 today, I wanted to come up with 36 things I love about her.

36 Things I love about my Sister Carrie.

  1. She’s my Sister!
  2. Her smile.
  3. Her laugh!!!
  4. She has great taste in music. (only one exception so far…ha ha ha, you know which song I’m referring to. 🙂 )
  5. She’s sentimental. If you give Carrie something and you mean something to her, she will keep it and cherish it.
  6. Good friend. She is loyal to her friends and still talks to friends she’s made over the years.
  7. She’s put up with me all these years 🙂 Sorry!
  8. She’s loving.
  9. She cares deeply about people. Sometimes, too much to where she neglects her own feelings, wants or desires.
  10. She is a great Social Worker.
  11. Her funny “faces” she makes.
  12. She’s a great Aunt. The kids think you are so cool and love doing stuff with you. Remember, they used to call you Aunt Giggles.
  13. We both have brown hair.
  14. We both have brown eyes.
  15. She loves her family.
  16. She loves Twilight 🙂 We will forever be able to talk about the Twilight Series!
  17. She loves Grease 🙂 Remember all the times we danced around the room to the Grease Soundtrack!? Carrie also likes Grease 2 and knows all the lyrics. 🙂
  18. She loves to play games. I will never forget the countless number of times we have played: Uno, pass the ace, Yahtzee or whatever games we would play together. There were times we would laugh so hysterically we couldn’t breathe.
  19. She’s musically talented with the violin.
  20. Her niece says, “She’s fun to be around.” I totally agree!
  21. She is very intelligent.
  22. Straight ‘A’ student.
  23. She knows how to cross stitch.
  24. She loves to put together puzzles…very good at it too!
  25. She loves kids.
  26. She loves the Lord.
  27. She’s a Texan!
  28. She has always looked out for our baby brother, Ricky.
  29. Her brother-in-law says, “I love that she always goes to the family reunions.” I second that!
  30. She’s financially responsible by paying off her car note. That is HUGE!
  31. She always calls me on my birthday…thank you!
  32. Sometimes she comes to visit me, although not enough…whaaaa 🙂
  33. She listens to me when I want to talk.
  34. She has a great sense of humor.
  35. She makes me laugh.
  36. Last but not least, she’s Carrie…there’s nobody just like you in the world. You are very special.

However far our lives may take us,

some things will never be more than a memory away…

things like laughter, bright moments that never fade,

and the warmth and happiness we’ve shared as sisters.

Happy Birthday, Carrie!

I love you,

Happy Birthday Brother!

Yesterday was my brother’s birthday. This is for you brother! (Yesterday I was recovering from the half marathon…pain, please forgive me!)

I hope you had a great day, but more importantly I hope you have a great year! I have a good feeling this year will be a turning point in your life. Turning 30 is not such a bad thing. What is it with men and year milestones!? 🙂 I am so excited about your decision to go to college full time! I know you can do it! If I did it, you can too! We’ll discuss this more at Thanksgiving. Your thirst for knowledge in your area of expertise will be quenched at a university and will bring you much joy. Not only that, it will bring many opportunities for you to meet that special someone who you’ll marry. Then you can have the children you have always wanted and make me an aunt! 🙂 I am ready to hold some little babies again, you know the kind I can love on and then return to you. 🙂 (You know we are done with having kids.)
Anyway, remember that you are at this stage in your life because it is where you are supposed to be. You are who you are because of what you have experienced till today. Don’t think about what might have been, only think about what blessings you have today. I know the future you want is attainable and within your grasp. I believe in you and love you tremendously! Don’t give up, keep forging ahead despite whatever obstacles come in your path.
Your Sister,
P.S.: I love that picture of you and your niece!

38 is GREAT!

Today is my birthday and I want to thank everyone who called me to wish me a happy day. It is special that you remembered. It has been a good day. I started out by running 3 miles on the treadmill at the gym. I placed my little card on the scanner like I do every time I enter the gym and the computer all of a sudden said “Happy Birthday!” It totally shocked me! Then everyone in the office said Happy Birthday to me. That was pretty cool!

I then decided I would go see the progress of the house. There was only one framer there. It is very cloudy today with a high chance of rain. He informed me that one of the framers fell off a rafter yesterday working. I was very surprised to find out they worked yesterday. I did not expect that, being Labor Day, & then to find out someone who has been instrumental in building our miracle was hurt doing so. I was sad to hear the news. I think he has shoulder and ribs injured. The one man who was there asked me why I was coming & taking pictures of the house. I was thinking in my mind, “why would I NOT take pictures…it is my dream home you are building.” Anyhow, he continued talking and said out of all the 12 houses he has help build in the last 3 years that only one other owner came to take pictures. I was a little surprised myself and then told him it might be due to people working full time. I think maybe they just came and took pictures at night when they were not there anymore. This was a very nice man and I began to explain to him that I am very grateful for their work. “I want to take pictures and capture this process…it is a miracle to me. I like to see how it has grown. Honestly, I am in awe.” He looked at me and said, “you are the first person to say that, usually everyone takes us for granted.” I can not begin to tell you how humbling it was to hear him say this to me. He continued talking, sharing stories of how rude owners were to them, treating them like second class citizens. My sympathy overflowed as I listened to him. I am very grateful for these men, the framers of our new house. They have a special talent…it really is amazing to watch them work and see their progress.

At the last minute, a friend invited me to lunch and we visited a quaint little “Tea Room” in our small little town. Then before we knew it, it was time to pick up the kids from school. Hubby just got home with a cake for dessert…isn’t that so sweet! He also gave me Stephenie Meyer’s book The Host! Something to look forward to reading. Although, I really can’t imagine it being any better than Twilight. So we are off to have dinner at my favorite Italian Restaurant as a family. I made a birthday mix today and found a song I have been looking for for years: Something Good by Utah Saints. It is such a fun song to dance to!

I hope this finds all of you, my family & friends having a good day too! I am so blessed to have you all in my life. And even though I have wrinkles, grey hair and a slower metabolism I am grateful to be here this day…it is a gift itself!

Adios, Shan
