Helpful Ways to Encourage Fitness

I’m running again!

It’s a good thing, because I can’t fit into any of my clothes. I can’t stand going shopping for new clothes if I have to go up a couple of sizes. Boo!  I don’t care how cute the outfit is, if I have bigger hips or thighs or whatever…it doesn’t look good on me.

Weight gain doesn’t usually make for the best of running circumstances. It’s harder to run pulling that extra weight along. But, I have some helpful strategies I’m using I thought I would share.

  1. Run when it’s cooler.  You might be thinking duh! Well, it makes a huge difference. It was in the 60’s this morning and it felt heavenly! The hotter it is, the more difficult the run…at least for me.
  2. MUSIC! I’m going to share a few of my Pandora stations I’ve been listening to lately that carry me through: Alternative Endurance Training Radio, Dance Cardio Radio & Summer Hits 2015 Road Trip Radio.
  3. NingXia Nitro fbj44 familybringsjoy.comYoung Living’s NingXia Nitro! This dietary supplement has become a staple in my home. Nitro contains naturally occurring caffeine and Bioenergy’s D-Ribose to support athletic performance and endurance. Bioenergy Ribose supports physical performance, recovery and increases overall energy reserves. (These statements have not been evaluated by the Food & Drug Administration. Young Living products are not intended to diagnose, cure, treat or prevent any disease.) Speaking for myself, I know it has helped me with my running among other things, but for this post we are talking about running/exercising.
  4. Fitness fbj44 familybringsjoy.comYoung Living’s Fitness Oil. The INFUSED Fitness™ Inspired by Oola essential oil blend has been specially formulated to uplift, energize, and give you the inspiration to set and achieve your strength and fitness goals. I added a roller ball to this oil bottle. This way I can roll it on quickly before I leave the house to go to the gym or run outside. I’ve seen a difference when I use this oil.
  5. Have a mantra. Today’s mantra was “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Sometimes it might be “I think I can” repeated several times.  It’s good to have a mantra to recite when you feel like stopping. When I recite my mantra in my mind over and over while running, it helps me pull through times when I want to quit.

It’s difficult mentally when I remember how I used to be able to run many miles without stopping. Running is easier when you realize mind over body matters quite a bit. I was happy when I was able to run a certain path without stopping today. It’s good to celebrate small milestones along the way. I’m telling myself, if I could do it once, I can do it again. Good self talk and praise is very important to keep you going, not just today, but for many days of future physical fitness.

Over the summer, I had the opportunity to go to Young Living’s yearly convention. Something presented to me in that convention has changed my thinking about daily exercise.  A doctor, Olivier Wenker, asked:

Slide from YL convention familybringsjoy.com

Yes, I was at the end of my chair wanting to know the answer:

30 minutes a day familybringsjoy.com

Ta da! Isn’t that awesome?!  So on the days I’m not running much, when the majority of my exercise is walking, I don’t feel bad. I’m doing something very good for myself. Hubby always says, “some exercise is ALWAYS BETTER than no exercise.” So even if I’m not losing weight or inches, I am REDUCING Alzheimers, progression to diabetes, cancers, hip fractures, anxiety & depression (big one for me,) arthritis pain, and premature death.

Otherwise, I love the following graphic I found on pinterest:

no matter how slow you go you are still lapping everyone on the couch

Walking & Running Bring Joy,

Oh What Do You Do In The Summertime?

This summer has been especially busy!  I was talking to the family about my upcoming blog conference {It’s called Haven, see button on sidebar.}  My son said, “you’re going to a blog conference for a blog you don’t write on anymore.”  Hmmmmm…it looks like my boy might be visiting here more than I thought.  This was my answer, “it’s because I put my family first in the summer time.”  For once there was silence from him.

It is difficult to spend time writing and editing photos during the summer while the kids are home.  As a matter of fact, my youngest is currently pouting because I asked her to please wear her headphones while she watches a show on her iPod.  It’s difficult for this ADD mom to have noise in the background while writing.  It’s not that I don’t have anything to write about.  In fact, I have so many things I would like to write about.  Sometimes that is just as overwhelming as having nothing to write about.

One reason I haven’t had time to write is because I’m running again.  Let me tell you, this is the first summer out of all of my adult years (about 10) I’ve been running I’ve actually RUN.  I usually take the summer off from running.  If you live in the south, then you understand why.  It’s SO STINKING HOT!  Problem is, I get out of shape and gain weight over the summer.  Then it’s that much harder to start running again in the fall.  I promised myself after all the effort I’ve put into losing 10 pounds I needed to bite the bullet and run this summer.  It’s the only way I will keep my weight in check.

My son goes to a training program every morning at 6:30am.  After I drop him off, I go to our local walking/jogging track.  I will admit, I only run the first mile without stopping to walk.  The next 2 miles are a run/walk combination interspersed with water breaks.  It’s still between the 80’s and 90’s early in the morning.  My kids told me recently they thought I had lost weight since the beginning of the summer.  I was surprised they noticed and said so.

friendship brings joy familybringsjoy.comSo in between taking the kids to their various camps, conferences and our vacation…I made a new friend this summer.  She and her family moved here from a major city in the west.  I’ve been trying to keep her from going stir crazy in this small little town of ours.  She’s been going through Target withdrawals.  {been there. done that.}  I remember her calling me and asking me if there was a craft store here.  Oh how I wish!  I shared with her how I buy my crafting supplies.  We have spent a lot of fun time together already.  I realized while putting this little collage together of iPhone photos, we have done a LOT of swimming together. {which is why I’m always in my swim suit in the photos.}  She brings her littles over to swim in our pool.  The first time they came over her 2 boys wouldn’t even get in the pool.  They played around the pool.  The second time they came over they stood on the steps of the pool.  Now, with their swim vests securely fastened, they swim around and do great!  It’s been wonderful to see their progress and the huge grins on their faces.  Fortunately, her sweet baby girl adores the water.  I’m pretty sure she will be swimming in no time!  I enjoy seeing my kids take her little ones under their wing and act as big sisters and brothers to them.  We have enjoyed having friends in our home again.  It’s been such a long time since we’ve had close friends.  If you’ve read my blog for a while, you might have seen me whine about not having good friends here.  So if you were one of my readers who has been praying for me, you’re prayers have been answered.  And I thank you so much for doing so.  Friends definitely bring JOY and make life happier.

One of the things I love about K is her infectious positive attitude.  She always has a smile on her face and is very complimentary.  And she does this despite the lack of sleep she receives from having a baby who isn’t sleeping through the night yet.  We share a lot of things in common.  We have fun talking about Instagram, crafts, blogging {she has a private blog}, mom stuff, books and our faith.  K likes to take photos as much as I do! 😉  I also want to tell her husband HAPPY BIRTHDAY today!

Summer is coming to a close.  Only 3 more weeks until school begins here.  7 more weeks until I take my oldest to college.  I leave to go to Atlanta for Haven Conference in a week!  Look for an introduction post to the lovely home bloggers who will be attending this conference in the next day or 2.  I can’t wait to get back to blogging on a more regular basis when the kids are back in school.  Next month I will celebrate Family Brings Joy’s 5 year anniversary!  I’m planning on some fun stuff to offer and share with you.

I truly hope your family’s summer has been filled with special times together.  Feel free to share what y’all have been doing on here in the comments section.  I love to hear what families are doing.  Thanks so much for reading Family Brings Joy.  YOU are AWESOME! 🙂

Oh and sweet C…thank you for motivating me to sit down and write another post.  It is a HUGE compliment for you to tell me you read my blog.  Love you.

We can persevere,

Breaking Tradition & Breaking Dawn’s Families

Well, it pains me to say I broke tradition last night. 🙁

I did not go to the midnight showing of Breaking Dawn this morning.  Are you shocked?!

Since beginning my Operation Get Fit, I have signed up for the Hilton Head Half Marathon.  So this Momma is serious.  I knew if I went to the midnight showing I probably wouldn’t get my training run in today.  Let’s face it, I didn’t want to run today even with getting a night’s worth of sleep.  It’s been rough getting back into shape.  My runs have not been easy at all.  This is different for me.  I have run one marathon and 3 half marathons.  Usually by now in my training it is not too difficult to run 3 miles.  This time I can’t seem to get into the groove and I am dreading every run.  I share this for the purpose of letting all of you newer runners indulge in the fact, that it CAN be difficult, even for us more ‘seasoned’ runners. {I’m sorry if that sentence is a run-on, no pun intended}  Running is more about mind over body than you realize.  Each run this week has felt as though I am running the last 3 miles of a marathon.  I find if I am thinking too much about the run and the difficulty, I want to stop.  So I train myself to think about other things.  For example, one day I took the word BLESSINGS and for each letter I thought of something I consider a blessing; something I am grateful for.  Another example: there is a young man who walks his dog on the track every morning…from behind he looks like Edward {Robert Pattinson} so I would tell myself to run to Edward. LOL, hey you do what you need to do to keep running.

Back to Breaking Dawn…my 16 year old daughter and I stood in line for tickets yesterday to the 4:25 showing today.  I have to brag about one of the BEST things of living in small town USA…our tickets were $4 each!  That is the matinee price, ahhhh…LOVE that!

Waiting in line for our tickets yesterday 🙂

In the middle of the night I woke up and had the idea of talking a little about the importance of FAMILY in the Twilight Series. {Yep, us bloggers are always thinking about content for our blogs}  Family is a strong theme throughout the books.

There is the Cullen Family:

The Swan Family:

The Volturi Family:

In Breaking Dawn you learn more about The Amazon Family, The Denali Family, The Egyptian Family, The Irish Family & The Romanian Family.

Yes, these families are not real, but the importance of FAMILY in the books {& movies} is very real.  Family stands behind each other and accepts each others faults no matter what.  It’s about team work, strength in togetherness and sharing.

Last but not least, I had to add this to today’s post:

Front of Scarf

Back of Scarf

One of my very creative Twilight friends here in town made her Twilight T-Shirts into a scarf!  What a wonderful idea, huh?!  Thank you Tammy for allowing me to share this awesomeness with my readers. 😀  I LOVE it!!!

Happy Friday,

Operation Get Fit {& Lose Inches!}

Oh how I love this poster!  I need to have it displayed next to my bed so I see it when I get up in the morning.  This is excellent motivation.

It all started with a well check at the doctors office.

Scratch, let’s back up a little.

It all started with Summer.  Yep, I don’t run in the Summer.  It’s too hot!  And this summer was just plain outrageously HOT!  So much so that taking a dip in our pool was like taking a bath, no thanks!  We had over 2 months with 100 degree temps or higher.  It still somewhat seems like summer in the afternoons here.  We haven’t left the 80’s yet, definitely doesn’t seem like Fall at all!  Thus the inevitable to happen…no exercise, gain inches.  For those of you who say, “why don’t you just run on a treadmill?”  To run on a treadmill is almost as bad as taking my finger nails out.  I can’t stand it…BORING.  Plus, I don’t run the same speed at every second or minute.

Back to the doctors office…blah, blah blah…they made me get on a stinking scale.  Yep, I gained 6 pounds in the last 3 months!  No wonder I can’t fit into any of my clothes!!  Who wants to buy new clothes that are a size up?  NOT ME, but I had to, otherwise I’d be wearing sweats every day.  It’s just not fun buying bigger clothes, I don’t care how cute they are!

Documenting My Run This Morning

This leads me to my new plan: Operation Get Fit!

I started Operation Get Fit today!  This morning was gorgeous and in the 60’s.  Dropped off the cutie at school & headed to the track.  I decided to start slow.  First and foremost, stretching is a must.  Afterward, my plan was to run one mile and walk one mile.  While running my mile, I passed 8 walkers and {told myself} everyone still in bed. {snicker}  Isn’t it amazing how positive thoughts and perspective can change your outlook and keep you motivated!!

BTW, I almost panicked when my ipod shuffle’s {with my running music} battery was dead.  It is almost impossible to run without music for me.  Instead of getting upset and using that as an excuse to not run, I pulled out my iPhone and powered up the Pandora App.  I found a wonderful station under the Workout Genre.  It’s called Alternative Endurance Training.  The songs had good beats for running and if any of the lyrics used bad language, I just pushed the thumbs down button and it started a new song.  Thank goodness for Pandora!  I was so grateful to have it to run to this morning!!! { Apple & Pandora aren’t paying me to say this 😉 }

So who wants to join me?

Every day this week (except Sunday):

Run 1 mile & Walk 1 mile

That’s not too much, huh?  I think it’s doable and it’s my goal for the week.

It always helps to have a friend to run with.  So who is with me?  We can keep tabs on one another and be each others cheer leaders.  Each week I will create a new running schedule.

Last but not least, don’t forget tomorrow is the last day to link up your Family Memory Boards for the Family Memory Board Link Party.

I’m not quite sure why I haven’t gotten more links.  Surely almost every family has some sort of place where they display their photos?  Right?

I am very grateful for IHeart Organizing, Birds Party, Heart Break Kids and Sweetgirl Expressions who have graciously shared their unique creations with us.
