Bad Days Can Have Good Endings

Alexander screening familybringsjoy.comSaturday our family had the wonderful opportunity to screen the upcoming movie Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.  That is a very long title for a movie.  Try to say that fast!  I will refer to the movie as Alexander for the rest of this post. 😉  Oh and in case you are wondering what the full movie poster looks like (since I couldn’t squeeze it all in my selfie pic to the left.)

Alexander movie poster

I’m always super grateful when there is a movie in which every member (our kids ages 16 & 11) of our family can enjoy watching it together.  Family values movies seem to be few and far between these days.  I watched the following trailer once before going to the movie.  In case you haven’t seen it yet, here it is:

I wonder how many other moms might have cringed a little while watching the preview…wondering to themselves, “do I really want to pay to see a bad day?”  To be honest, I thought that.  Yet, I knew Disney would make it right and they did.  Alexander has something for every member of the family to relate and laugh about.  It turns out the movie is based on a children’s book written in the early 70’s by Judith Viorst.  If you liked Steve Carrell in Date Night then you will like him in this movie as well.  Steve plays Alexander’s father.

“As a dad I can totally relate to this movie. Things tend to not go the way that you think they’ll go. But there’s always a contingency plan. There’s always a backup. Things go wrong in life and I think that’s part of the charm of this movie: Everyone experiences those days. It’s all about how you struggle through and keep your dignity and your sense of family and fun and the kind of love that is pervasive between the characters in this film.”  Steve Carrell

I am a huge fan of Alias, so I’m always excited to see Jennifer Garner.  I enjoyed seeing Jennifer play the mother roll in The Odd Life of Timothy Green.  She doesn’t disappoint in this movie too.  It’s interesting I brought up Date Night and The Odd Life of Timothy Green, because if you mix those 2 movies together, you can sort of sense how Alexander is (without the magic aspect.)

“I don’t think I’ve ever played anything closer to my real life. Not that I have days as bad as this, but just days with the chaos of having a bunch of kids in the house—when there’s a kid peeing on the floor, and the dog is throwing up and somebody’s about to step in it, and you’re trying to get dinner on the table. I can definitely relate to the idea of trying to do too much in a day.”  Jennifer Garner

The family portrayed in Alexander does have a really bad day, but what I like is how the family deals with the bad things.  The Dad is an optimist and is always telling the children to hop on the ship of positivity.  Families can learn a lot from these characters.  My 16 year old son really laughed out loud during the driving test scene. He is about to take his driving test, possibly tomorrow.  I’m truly hoping it doesn’t go the way this one did.

Alexander driving test scene

There were so many good quotes I wish I had written down while watching Alexander.  Most of them were said by Alexander.  The following quote, however simple, is completely true. “You gotta have the bad days so you can love the good days.”

Alexander is a definite family values movie…a must see!  You won’t be disappointed.  Let me put it this way…I don’t like to buy movies or watch them more than once.  Yet when I left the movie I thought to myself, “We need to buy that movie when it comes out on DVD.”  Bravo!  Well done!  Take your family to see Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day this weekend.

Just for you, my awesome readers, I’m including the recipe to Ben Cooper’s Quiche he made in the movie.  Quiche is one of my favs.  Can’t wait to make it myself.

I will conclude with the Cooper family sitting down at the table for meal time…hope you’re family is sitting together for meals. (You know how I feel about that)

Muppets Most Wanted Movie Review

I’ve never done a movie review before. {just warning you 😉 }  I was a huge fan of the Muppet’s when I was younger.  I remember gathering in the living room to watch it on TV with my family.  I wasn’t sure if I would like them as much as an adult.  I don’t know why, because I enjoyed the Muppet’s 4D movie experience at both Disney Land and Disney World.  I still absolutely adore the Christmas John Denver & The Muppets.  It’s one of my favorite Christmas albums I play year after year.  I think I saw the very first Muppet movie when my kids were younger, but I admit I haven’t seen the others.

Muppets Most Wanted familybringsjoy.com

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised.  I sat next to my 15 year old Son, who wasn’t super thrilled to be going.  I think that’s understandable from a teenage boy.  He didn’t particularly like the parts when they would break out into song like they do in musicals.  He’s not a musical kind of guy, though.  However, there were a couple of times where I heard him laugh out loud.  Those moments were priceless for me.  I could stop this review right now and say there ya go, it’s worth going if my teenaged son laughed.

The Muppets Most WantedI thought it was definitely worth going to.  And I’m not just saying this because Disney gave us free tickets to the screening.  As an adult, this movie reminded me of the old Muppet Show and brought back good memories.  Can’t you hear the tune playing in the back of your mind?  I think adults will particularly like the movie, which is good, because sometimes kid friendly movies aren’t as much fun for the parents.  I laughed throughout the whole movie.  There is a plot, yet I’m not the kind of reviewer who will talk on and on about the plot.  I think that ruins the movie if you know all about it before hand.  I find I enjoy movies more when I don’t know much about them beforehand.  I will say there are some celebrities who make an appearance.

I give this two thumbs up!  This is a perfect family movie.  Plan a movie night or day this weekend and take your kids to see Muppets Most Wanted.  You won’t be disappointed.

Movies Bring Joy,

Friday’s Five Things I Learned At Disney Land

1. The Disney Character I’m most like is Jessie from Toy Story.

There’s a place in the California Adventure park where a computer asks you a bunch of questions to see what character you are most like.  Turns out I’m most like Jessie.

I found this info out AFTER we met Jessie.  If I would have known of my special kinship, I would have gotten a photo with her too!  Below Jessie signs my daughter’s autograph book.

2. There are special cutting artists on Main Street of Disney Land who can cut your silhouette by hand.

You might not think this is cool, but I do!  The lady who cut my kid’s silhouettes has been working this craft at Disney Land for 40 years!  I could not believe my eyes as I watched her.

3. If you feel something in your hair at Toon Town in Disney Land, don’t pull it out of your hair…it might be a bee!

DSC08933Yep, this happened to me.  I felt something in my hair.  I pulled it out of my hair to find a bee.  As soon as I figured out what it was I let go of it…too late…it stung me.  I haven’t had a bee sting since I was 4 or 5 years old.  It’s pretty painful.  We found the first aid station and they had some good numbing gel for it with an ice pack.  Thank goodness!  For future reference, if anything like this or any other unfortunate accident occurs while you are visiting Disney Land, tell the nearest cast member (worker) and the nurse will come to you.  We had to walk a little ways to get to the first aid station.  The nurse told us she could have came to us.

4. Spending money on an experience is completely worth it! (I already knew this)  In this case it was the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique in Disney Land.

This was my daughter’s chance to be prettied up like a Disney princess.   The sweet beautician treated her like royalty doing her hair, nails and makeup.

Daughter was able to choose what dress/princess she wanted to be.  At the end of the beautifying process they open the curtains you see behind her.  A special mirror is revealed with animation and music. (I wish now I would have taken video)  Here she is…Snow White.

Next included a photo shoot in Cinderella’s carriage!

That’s not all…time to meet other princesses!  First is Cinderella.

Another favorite…Ariel from The Little Mermaid.

I am so glad we did this.  I will forever have this time etched in my memory…and more importantly I think it will be something she will never forget.

5. I don’t like roller coasters, crowds and kids who complain about wait times.

I used to like roller coasters when I was young.  As a matter of fact, I would purposefully ride in the very front and put my hands in the air.  Not anymore…it’s another sign of me getting old.  Boo!  I got motion sick riding Space Mountain.  I hate motion sickness.

teacups with dad familybringsjoy.com

son & I at Disney Land familyI thought going in February was a good time to go to Disney Land…meaning less crowded.  Turns out Valentine’s Day/President’s Day is a popular time to go.  I mean honestly, we could hardly walk through the parks.  Thursday was the least crowded of all the days of the weekend.  I’m so glad we took the kids out of school that day.  Disney Land was more crowded than California Adventure, yet I was very disappointed with the amount of people there.

If I didn’t already know how impatient my kids are already, I do now.  Sigh…it was incessant whining and complaining about waiting in the lines.  Sometimes they wouldn’t want to go on the ride if they saw how long the wait time was.  And let me tell you, most of the wait times were around an hour.  We learned to use fast passes as much as possible.  The last day we were there my daughter and I only rode one ride all day.  Instead, we went to lots of shows, which I love.

This was our first family vacation without our oldest daughter.  If you are a new reader, she’s a college freshman at an out of state university.  It was weird not having her with us.  This is a different stage of life for all of us right now.  K, if you are reading this, know how very much you were missed.  We thought about ya while searching every shop for a plush Flynn Rider.  I’m sure there will be other Disney opportunities for us to vacation together in the future.

As Tigger says, “Ta ta for now!”

Disney Brings Joy,

Tangled Weekend Giveaway

I am very excited to offer a very special giveaway this weekend.

One winner will receive a hand signed Disney Tangled movie poster.

Flynn Ryder himself, Mr. Zachary Levi (aka Chuck), will personally hand sign a Tangled movie poster.

The winner will also receive a bonus surprise of either a Pascal Beanie Baby, T-shirt, or a Paper Lantern.

(one of the listed in addition to the poster)

My girls and I saw this movie at the theater on opening day during Thanksgiving.  I left Tangled with soggy eyes of happiness.  The movie is adventure filled with twists & turns, phenomenal scenery, funny characters, exceptional music and uplifting messages.  Disney always has a way of making me feel like a child again.  Ahhhh…sigh.  I told the girls it was now my favorite Disney movie. {I’m not just saying this because of this giveaway, seriously!  Believe me, I’m jealous of the winner}  This is saying a lot since there are so many Disney movies to love.

This promotion is to celebrate the DVD release of Tangled.  I bought our DVD/Blu-ray combo pack yesterday.  We watched it as a family last night.  I wondered if I would like it as well watching it the second time.  I’m not a big fan of watching movies over & over again.  But I knew instantly after watching it at the theater I wanted to see it again.  In the movie theater we watched it in 3D.  I was extremely pleased with the Blu-ray version.  The cinematography was just as beautiful as in 3D {and without wearing the tight fitting 3D glasses.}

My favorite parts about the movie {without giving too much away, in case you haven’t seen it}:

  1. Rapunzel shows great responsibility by doing chores FIRST every day.
  2. Rapunzel tries many different activities and practices her talents.
  3. Rapunzel has a dream, makes a plan, displays persistence /perseverance  to pursue her dream.
  4. Favorite song: “I See the Light”  Makes me melt. 🙂
  5. The floating lanterns!  Talk about romantic 😉
  6. Rapunzel’s parents never gave up hope.
  7. How many Disney movies portray short, brown haired girls…that’s all I’m going to say. {I love that part!}

The widget included in this post offers:

  • Tangled Talents ~ The Tangled widget will allow children of all ages to discover talents they might not have known they had.  Whether you are an aspiring artist, chef, or just feeling crafty, Rapunzel will lead the way as you find your own hidden abilities.
  • Decorating Tips by Designer Claire Keane ~ Claire Keane, daughter of Tangled director and animator Glen Keane, will share tips on how to decorate your room just like Rapunzel’s, including a time lapse video of Claire painting a mural.

HOW TO WIN
