Blissdom Introduction

Some of my new cyber (facebook & twitter) friends who are also attending Blissdom Blog Conference have introduced themselves on their blogs. What a great idea! I’m taking a break from packing and decided I would quickly write an intro before heading out to run.

  1. Thanks to my Army Dad (retired now) I was born in Germany. Unfortunately, I was a baby when we returned to the States so I don’t remember visiting. I hope to visit there some day. I grew up in Texas, so I consider myself a Texan even though our family moved to Oklahoma 4 years ago.
  2. In September I celebrated the big 40! Fortunately, I inherited ‘young looking’ genes. I absolutely love it when people tell me I look too young to have a 15 year old. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  3. I’ve had many career ambitions in my lifetime. I took dance from very young to high school. So at one point in time I dreamed of moving to NYC to become a prima ballerina {I still LOVE to dance!} I changed my mind and wanted to be a Lawyer…did the debate thing in High School. Since I’m not the academic type {couldn’t see myself going to school for 6+ years} I decided against it. Next, I set my sights on a Public Relations major and minoring in Theater. I ended up with an Associates Degree in Education. I met my husband when I was in college for my bachelors degree in Recreational Therapy. Life had different plans for me because now I work at home as a Family Manager. Hardest job ever!
  4. My husband is learning to multi task as he was recently ordained the Bishop for our local church congregation. In addition to being the Father of our 3 kids, he has a busy medical practice and enjoys running, cycling and triathlons.
  5. I’m not really a sweet tooth kind of gal. Salty foods like extra cheesy Goldfish, cheese Chex Mix, cheese Doritos {basically I love cheese!} are my weakness! However, I am a sucker for Reeses. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Chocolate and peanut butter is the perfect combo!
  6. I used to LOVE television. However, I don’t have as many shows I like to watch as I used to. My favorite show now is Parenthood. Thanks to the Twilight series I have become an avid reader of fantasy/paranormal romance books {mostly teen & young adult.} So now I read. Before Twilight, I only read non-fiction books. Last year I read or listened to 37 books.
  7. Leigh (which is my middle name, BTW) wrote about her personality that I thought was very similar to me as well. She said, “I’m a good mix of extrovert and introvert.” I think I am the same. I am definitely a people person. I don’t like to judge others or gossip. You never know what people are going through in their life. My kids are constantly hearing me say to them, “they are a child of God, too,” when I hear them speaking unkind things about someone. It is very important to me that my kids learn to be accepting of others no matter what someones shortcomings might be. I am a firm believer in doing unto others as you would have them do unto you.
  8. I ran cross country & track in grade school, but discontinued running until after I had my third child. I joined Team in Training with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and ran my first half marathon in 2003 and my first full marathon {a fulfilled dream!} in 2005. Currently, I struggle to get back into running after suffering from Achilles Tendinitis.
  9. I like to be straight forward. It’s weird. According to books I have read about the way women talk and the way men talk and my conversational style is more like a man. I don’t mean that my voice sounds like a man. LOL I just like to be direct and talk about things that matter. I don’t mind talking about the weather, but I would much rather talk about music, movies, books, blogs, graphic arts, decorating, travel, crafts, my family, my faith, photography, scrapbooking or the lives of the people I am talking to.
  10. In a nut shell, I’m just a down-to-earth girl who has MANY interests. ๐Ÿ˜€

Looking forward to making many new friends this week!

Auf Wiedersehen,
Shan

P.S. : I love hats! If you see someone wearing a hat at Blissdom, it might be me! :)

Blog Love

I headed over to Blog Guidebook today to check out what’s up and found their Top Blog 2010 winner: Today’s Letters. I instantly fell in love with this adorable couple’s blog containing their letters to one another. Awwww! And of course they are from the DFW area, my old stompin’ grounds. ๐Ÿ˜‰ You will clearly see why they won with their beautiful photos and various interests they blog about. Hands down, my favorite posts are the letters they write each other. I envy the communication they have with one another. Congratulations to Today’s Letters. Thank you Blog Guidebook for sharing them with me.

Blog on,

Blissfully Blogging with Music

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

I’m excitedly preparing for a conference called Blissdom. It’s a blog conference devoted to helping bloggers connect in real life as well as improving their blogs. It’s interesting to hear the comments I receive when I tell friends & family I’m attending. Being a blog reader for several years now, I am used to seeing blog conference badges. I’m realizing how ‘unique’ I am in my little world. This is one of the reasons I’m grateful to attend.

Many of the blogs I read are very helpful in my everyday life. I like ones who help me with organizing, books, decorating, photography, crafts, scrapbooking, running, parenting, etc. Many of these bloggers have similar interests as me. They might share my faith. Many have children and stay home as well. So, I’m looking forward to meeting women I feel like I know already from reading their blogs.

I looked back yesterday and realized I have been blogging since August 2008. Reading over some of those early posts I wrote are very enlightening. Some of them kind of surprise me. Is that really me? I began my blog to be able to keep in touch with my friends and family on a regular basis. A place for me to share my photos and journal about our family life. As with most things, it has evolved and changed over the years. I enjoy having a little place in the cyber world that is just my own. It keeps me grounded and helps me not forget who I am, as most Mom’s can do when their children are young. {incredibly therapeutic too!}

Most of my readers are usually family and friends. I love it when they leave me comments. :) Every once in a while I will have other visitors who find me from a link party or such. I even had a well known author write a comment. What a special surprise! Meeting and making new friends this way has given me a sweet boost. Basically, it’s taking me a while to get to this point, {sorry!} I am hoping to be able to learn more about this at the conference.

After registering I received an extra special bonus when Blissdom announced Michelle Branch & Matt Kearney would be performing for the attendees! Music is HUGE in my life. These adult alternative artists are superbly talented. I have enjoyed listening to their music and decided to share the above playlist. Enjoy!

Music is what feelings sound like,

Art for my Craft Room

I stumbled upon a wonderful blog named Not JUST A Housewife. The blog’s name is genius! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Not only does she have all the stuff I love like Printables, Tutorials, Crafts, Decorating, Furniture and Kid Activities, she has a beautiful blog! She has the perfect subway art for my craft room. I have been working steadily in my craft room at getting it organized and user friendly (I’ll post before and after photos later.) This will look just right in there! I just had to share the art and her blog. It has made for a smile on my face on this Tuesday morning. Thank you Stacy!

Balance…

is my constant goal. Not just at the beginning of a new year, ALWAYS. I believe, specifically for me, my grand scheme or purpose in this life is to live it with balance. It hasn’t come easy. I find when I do have a balance, I am much happier.

Components of a good balanced day: {no particular order}

  • Time with my Maker
  • Time for me
  • Time with my husband
  • Time with my kids
  • Time with friends
  • Time for rest/sleep
  • Time for nourishment
  • Time for work/service inside the home
  • Time for organizing

Components of a good balanced week:

  • Exercise Time
  • Creative Time
  • Service outside the home
  • Errands
  • Church Worship
  • Everything mentioned for balanced day. :)

I found the following picture on Flickr.com thanks to Patty Anne. I was looking for a good photo of balance scales to add to this post and came across her genius picture. This is what Patty wrote below it:

balance

My one word resolution for the year is balance.
This year I seek balance in myself, my days, my home, my relationships, in my life.

I often feel like a high-wire act, balancing on that thin line riding a unicycle holding onto opposing priorities with a couple of people propped precariously upon my shoulders while life tosses more at me from all directions, smiling the whole time saying “I’m fine, really, I’m fine”.

balance

I completely agree with Patty.
